Upon selecting a question type you will need to complete specific fields:

Question ID (optional): The Question ID is optional but is available if you would like to include a variable name for the question. For example, if you are asking if a respondent is a male or female, the question ID for this question might be “gender”. When you export a data file, Question ID’s will appear in the second row of data. By default, variable names are assigned that correspond with the question, or variable numbering (i.e. V1, V2, V3, V4, V5).

Question Instructions (optional): This field is used to create special instructions for an item as well as to create section or page headings.

Question: The question text is required in this field.

Choices: This field contains the response option choices for the question. To type the questions simply type one response option per row: For example:

Strongly Agree
Agree
Neither Agree nor Disagree
Disagree
Strongly Disagree

Response choices can be copied and pasted from one question to the next.

Required: If you wish to make the question required select this option by checking the Required box. Respondents will be required to complete the question before moving on to the next page in the survey. The text (required) will show next to the question on the survey page.

Page Break After Question: You have the flexibility to designate page breaks after any question. To create a page break after a question, simply check this box.

Rows: Rows are a special field on Matrix question types. Rows refer to the items being rated.

(Question List) To view a list of the questions you have created, click the Question List button. From this list you will be able to Edit questions you have already created, move them Up or Down or Delete questions.

(Move) The Move button allows you to easily move an item anywhere up or down within your survey. This option is particularly useful with surveys that contain a large number of items. The Up and Down buttons can also be used to move items on the question list.

Branching The branching option allows you to utilize skip logic or branching to skip questions that are irrelevant, given previous answers to a question

To view questions as you are creating them, you can select the survey from the SURVEY LIST. The survey will open in a new browser window. Remember as you add or edit questions you will need to REFRESH the survey, using your Internet browsers REFRESH button to view the new questions or edits.

Numeric vs. Text response options: As researchers we often prefer to have numeric response options recorded and saved in the data file. This allows for easy computations and is required for most statistical analyses. To create response options that will store numeric responses in the data file, you will need to create response option choices using the following approach:

Strongly Agree{value=5}
Agree{value=4}
Neither Agree nor Disagree{value=3}
Disagree{value=2}
Strongly Disagree{value=1}

The text response options will appear on the survey and the numeric response options will appear only in the data file.
